OS Clavelitos Have Arrived

Os Clavelitos is an “American Samba” band based in New York City, who creates original music combining traditional Brazilian rhythms (samba, baiao, bossa nova, and frevo) with English lyrics. With band members from Brazil, Japan, and the U.S., the six piece ensemble celebrates Brazil’s rich musical heritage, while incorporating their eclectic performing backgrounds in “Latin”, indie, jazz, pop, and folkloric styles. The band’s three composers/lyricists, Anthony Lanni (Detroit, MI – band leader, guitarist, and producer), Dan Kendall (Detroit, MI – multi-instrumentalist and co-producer), and Chieko Honda (Osaka, Japan – lead vocalist), craft distinctive pieces showcasing Os Clavelitos’ (“Little Carnations” in English) dynamic percussion, harmonic nuance, and Chieko’s sensual, open-hearted vocals; sharing tales of romance, melancholy, and conceptual whimsy. The propulsive and finely textured percussion comes courtesy of Uka Gameiro (Recife, Brazil) and Arei Sekiguchi (Tokyo, Japan). Uka is a published scholar of Brazilian rhythms (Modern Drummer, Percussive Notes, Drumhead) with a unique folkloric approach to the drum kit, adapted from rhythms of his home village. Arei is an accomplished specialist in Afro-Brazilian/carnival style hand percussion, having studied with Jorge Alabe and performed accompaniment to Quenia Ribiero’s Afro-Brazilian Dance Class at Alvin Ailey. Saxophone and flute virtuoso Livio Almeida (Brasilia, Brazil) has performed with The O’Farrill Brother’s band, Monika Oliveira, and many other top notch ensembles; his melodic invention and dramatic focus are integral to the band’s sound. Os Clavelitos is essentially about coming together to share culture and influences; conjuring an enchanting vista of sounds, as welcoming as a leisurely Sunday feast, abundant with food, friends, dancing, and samba for all.

Os Clavelitos’ debut album, ArrivingOs Clavelitos, sets English lyrics over traditional Brazilian rhythms; weaving in diverse, often folkloric, stylistic strands. The NYC-based six piece ensemble, with members from Brazil, Japan, and the U.S., perform original compositions referencing a variety of Brazilian grooves: samba, baiao, frevo, bossa nova, occasionally extending outward into traditions like bolero and cha-cha. Over a forceful rhythmic core of drum and hand percussion, guitar and bass express an ever-shifting harmonic frame for lithe melodies, sensually delivered by vocalist Chieko Honda. Each piece has a clarity of storytelling, achieved through thoughtful lyrics and creative, focused arrangements; variously employing accordion, cavaquinho, flute, saxophone, and layered vocals to articulate a precise emotional arc for the listener. Sharing their stories of travel, memory, community, and loss (and Tom Cruise, really!), Os Clavelitos make a welcoming, big-hearted sound, inviting you to their samba parade, where we are all ‘Arriving’ joyfully home in our shared humanity.
